Printer Ink
Keeping your printer operating properly is often a problem if you are not using the correct type of printer ink cartridges. There are many different generic type cartridges available on the market, some of which are good and some that will simply ruin your printer. Understanding the various types of printer cartridges and if they will work with your computer is very important.
Getting The Right Cartridge
The most important aspect to buying printer ink is to make sure that you are getting the correct replacement cartridge. Unfortunately, there are literally hundreds of different types of printer ink cartridges, both black and color, so knowing which one you need is critical. The first thing that you will need to know is the manufacturer of the printer. Cartridges are manufacturer-specific, and a Lexmark cartridge will not fit in an HP printer or vise versa, even if they look the same and are the same size and shape.

In addition to the printer manufacturer, you will also need the model number of the printer. This is usually found beside the manufacturer's name on the printer itself. If you still have the manual, it will also give the printer model number and the replacement cartridge number. If you don’t have the manual, simply go online or to the printer section of the store and look up the model number in the printer catalogue. It will provide the printer cartridge number. Look under the specific manufacturer until you find the correct number. Remember that the same number under another manufacturer will not work in your printer.
In addition, be sure to know what type of printer you are using. Color printers will have a separate cartridge for colors and another for black ink. Photo printers will have several different color cartridges that may all require changing at various rates.
Generic printer ink is usually cheaper that the manufacturer's brands but can invalid the warranty on some equipment. Usually, the generic printer cartridges work well for basic color and black printing, but may not have the vivid colors in photography printing. Refilled cartridges are another popular option, but there are also issues with warranty and performance with these. It is less of a concern with black printing but may be an issue if printing a lot of multi-colored graphics.
Installing New Cartridges
Most printers have the same general instructions for changing cartridges and they can be found by clicking the printer icon and following the screen prompts. Changing cartridges simply involves popping out the old cartridge and installing the new one. Be sure to remove the adhesive nozzle protector to allow the ink to flow through the cartridge onto the paper. Always re-align the color and black printer ink cartridges after changing to ensure a crisp and well defined print.
